Nick Nurse Biography

Nick Nurse is an American professional basketball coach. He is best known as the head coach of the Toronto Raptors team and the Canadian men’s national team. Moreover, Nick led the Raptors to an NBA championship in 2019.

Nurse went to school at Kuemper Catholic Middle School. Afterward, Nick went to the University of Northern Iowa and graduated in 1990 with a degree in accounting. He also played for them, making a total of 11 appearances. Nick was the first head coach at the age of 23, after being hired by Grand View University in Lowa. At one point, he was the youngest basketball coach in the country.

Moreover, Nick has coached in Europe for 11 seasons for Telindus Oostende, London Towers, Manchester Giants, and Brighton Bears, among others. He also took over and served as the head coach of Iowa Energy in the D-League in 2007.

Nurse almost went to the college ranks as an assistant at Lowa State. However, he proceeded to stay with Energy through 2011. In that season, he coached the Rio Grande Valley Vipers from 2011 to 2013. He joined Toronto Raptors as an assistant in 2013 and later became the head coach in 2018 succeeding Casey. 

On May 25, 2019, Nick coached the Raptors to the 2019 NBA Finals and defeated the Milwaukee Bucks in six games. He was also named as the head coach of the Canadian men’s national team for the 2019 FIBA World Cup and beyond on June 24, 2019. In addition, Nick became the first head coach to win both the NBA and NBA G League (formerly called D-League) titles.

Additionally, Nick became the head coach in the 2020 NBA All-Star Game as the Eastern Conference representative. He was also named the NBA Coach of the Year on August 22, 2020.
