Kim Tae-Ri is an award-winning South Korean actress known for starring in critically-acclaimed films and TV series. Born in Seoul on April 24, 1990, Kim started her career appearing in theater productions and modeling in TV adverts.

She made her feature film debut in Park Chan-wook’s film The Handmaiden (2016), where she was chosen from among 1,500 candidates who auditioned for the role. Park’s first impression of Kim reminded him strongly of his first meeting with actress Kang Hye-Jung, who had her career breakthrough in Park’s film Oldboy (2003).

Kim starred in 1987: When the Day Comes (2017) and Little Forest (2018). The latter role won her the Best Actress Award for Television at the 58th Baeksang Arts Awards.

Kim’s characters often fight for a cause and display a unique, childlike laugh. She is also known to portray often characters who fight with weapons, especially guns, and who have been affected by the loss of a father.

Kim was required to learn Japanese to prepare for her debut role in The Handmaiden. She found it relatively easy because her character’s dialogue didn’t have to be as refined as the other characters in the film.
