Greer Garson Early Life Story, Family Background and Education:
Greer Garson was born on September 29, 1904, in Manor Park, East Ham (then in Essex, now in London), the only child of Nancy Sophia “Nina” (née Greer; 1880-1958) and George Garson (1865–1906), a London importing clerk. Her father was born in London to Scottish parents, while her mother was born in Drumalore (sometimes written Drumalure or Drumaloor), a townland in County Cavan, Ireland, near Belturbet. Greer is a contraction of MacGregor, another surname in the family.
David Greer (c. 1848-1913), her maternal grandpa, was a Royal Irish Constabulary sergeant stationed in Castlewellan, County Down. He became a land steward for the affluent Annesley family, who built Castlewellan, in the 1870s or 1880s. He lived in a big detached mansion called “Clairemount” near Shilliday’s builder’s yard, which was erected on the bottom section of what was known as Pig Street, or locally known as the Back Way. Greer Garson was frequently misidentified as having been born there (the Macmillan International Film Encyclopedia lists her birthplace as County Down, and her year of birth as 1908).
Garson studied French and 18th-century literature at King’s College London and went on to the University of Grenoble for her doctorate studies. She was named head of the LINTAS research library in the marketing department of Lever Brothers while hoping to be an actress. George Sanders, a coworker at the time, said in his memoirs that it was Garson who encouraged him to pursue a career in acting.
