He was a member of his high school’s Dunbar Poets basketball team, where he was mentored by coach Bob Wade. Bob Wade later became the University of Maryland’s head coach.
In high school, he was classmates with future NBA players David Wingate (a senior), Reggie Williams, and Reggie Lewis (classmates).
The Dunbar Poets went 29-0 during the 1981-82 season. Bogues was a junior at the time. Similarly, when Bogues was a senior, they finished the season 31-0. Indeed, USA Today named the Dunbar Poets top in the country.
Basketball Career in College
Bogues enrolled in North Carolina’s Wake Forest University.He played four years of college basketball. In his junior year, he averaged 11.3 points, 8.4 assists, and 3.1 steals per game.
