Majors was born on April 23, 1939, in Wyandotte, Michigan, United States of America. His father worked as a manual worker and died in the line of duty before he was even born. Alice Yeary, his mother, died in a car accident before he turned two. He was fortunate enough to be adopted by his uncle and aunt and moved to Middlesboro, Kentucky.
He aspired to be a football coach and was a member of Middlesboro High School’s football team. He graduated in 1957 and was awarded a football scholarship to Indiana University, where he continued to play.
He received his bachelor’s degree in history and physical education from Eastern Kentucky University in 1962. In 2006, he received his doctorate from the local university.
