When McG was a student at Corona del Mar High School, he met Mark McGrath. Initially, he planned to be the lead vocalist of a band he co-founded with McGrath. McGrath was persuaded to take over after he failed as a frontman. Rather, he worked as a producer and marketer for the band until he was 22 years old.
