Marino began his baseball career at Central Catholic High School. There he earned Parade All-American football accolades. Apart from that, the Kansas City Royals selected him in the fourth round of the 1979 amateur draft. However, he chose to continue playing collegiate football. Marino then enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh, where he played collegiate football from 1979 through 1982. As a student in 1979, he was a member of the university team dubbed the ‘Pittsburgh Panthers.’ Marino was leading the match against West Virginia University Mountaineers.

In his second year, 1980, his team finished second. He was named the team’s starting quarterback there. Additionally, Dan joined the elite group throughout those two years. Pitts’ team spent the majority of the season towards the top of the rankings. Marino’s team defeated the Georgia Bulldogs in the 1982 Super Bowl. He made a memorable short pass right before the game’s conclusion. Between 1979 and 1981, the Pitts team won 33 games and lost only three. His squad lost to Southern Methodist in the Cotton Bowl Classic.
