Jesus of Nazareth Ventura Soriano, better known as Johnny Ventura, was a Dominican singer and bandleader who specialized in merengue and salsa. He is best known for his albums “Cuidado Con el Cuabero,” released in 1963, and “Ah…! Yo No Se…No,” released in 1971. When he was sixteen, he won a singing competition hosted by La Voz de la Alegria.
Over the course of his 60-year career, Ventura, dubbed the “Elvis of merengue” by some in the music industry, released hundreds of recordings. According to the Latin Recording Academy, he received six Latin Music Grammys, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 for his “great artistic contributions to Latin music.” In addition, he served as deputy mayor of Santo Domingo from 1994 to 1998, and then as mayor from 1998 to 2002. We sadly lost such a versatile figure on July 28, 2021.
