Caleb Williams of USC won the 2022 Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, becoming the program’s first Heisman Trophy winner in his first year.
In what was the first all-quarterback group of Heisman finalists since 2018, Williams defeated the other three finalists, Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, TCU’s Max Duggan, and Georgia’s Stetson Bennett. Duggan came in second in the vote, with 1,420 points to Williams’ 2,031. Bennett finished fourth and Stroud third (539 points) (349 points). It is the 11th time a quarterback has won the award in the last 13 years.
“To now be a part of this historic fraternity is truly an honor and something I will cherish for the rest of my life,” Williams said during his acceptance speech at the ceremony in New York City on Saturday night. “While this is an individual award, I understand that nothing – and I mean nothing – in this sport, or in life, is done alone.”
Williams currently leads the FBS in passing touchdowns (37) and pass yards (4th) (4,075). He and Lincoln Riley both left Oklahoma after the 2021 season to join USC, where they helped to quickly turn the program around.
