In 1937, in Shreveport, Louisiana, he was born Johnnie Lee Cochran Jr., the son of an insurance salesman and an Avon goods saleswoman. Having spent his childhood in the area where he grew up, the family relocated to the West Coast in the second wave of the Great Migration, eventually arriving in Los Angeles in 1949.
He attended Los Angeles neighborhood schools before enrolling in Los Angeles High School in 1955. Following his high school graduation, he enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Economics in 1959.
Similarly, he received his Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School in 1962. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and the 45th “Tree Wreath Wearer.”
