Samra Tesfaye is the mother of Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, better known by his stage name The Weeknd, an artist, songwriter, and producer. During the red terror and hunger crises in Ethiopia in the late 1980s, she fled with Makkonen. Abel was born in Toronto, Ontario, where they settled.
