Annie Potts was born Anne Hampton Potts on October 28, 1952 in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. She is of white-American ancestry and of American nationality. Potts is the eldest child of Powell Grisette Potts and Dorothy Harris Potts. She grew up in Franklin, Kentucky, with her sisters Mary Eleanor Hovious and Elizabeth Grissette Potts.
Potts attended Franklin-Simpson High School and graduated in 1970. She then enrolled at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, where she got a bachelor of fine arts degree. Potts was in an automobile accident when she was 21 years old, which shattered multiple bones below her waist.
