Early Life of Dylan McDermott
Dylan McDermott was born on October 26, 1961 in Waterbury, Connecticut. His parents were both in their early teens when he was born: Diane was 15 and Richard was 17. By 1967, McDermott and his mother were living with his maternal grandmother Avis Marino.
On February 9, 1967, his mother Diane was murdered. Initially considered an accident, authorities later claimed to have found enough evidence to arrest John Sponza, who lived with Diane at the time, with murder. Sponza’s remains was found in a car trunk in Massachusetts in 1972. So McDermott and his sister were reared by Avis. He attended Holy Cross High School in Waterbury.
McDermott went to New York to see his biological father Richard. McDermott worked at Richard’s West Fourth Street Saloon in Greenwich Village. He began emulating his acting heroes Marlon Brando and Humphrey Bogart as a teen. His father’s third wife, writer Eve Ensler, adopted him at 15 and 23. Although she divorced his father, she remained close to McDermott and was the first to push him to pursue an acting career. She helped him by casting him in her plays. After Ensler miscarried, he took on the name “Dylan,” the name she had selected for her unborn child.
