Theodore Leonard Carl Pistorius, sometimes known as Oscar Pistorius, is a former professional sprinter from South Africa who was also found guilty of murder. He had both of his legs amputated when he was a baby, but he still excelled at sports. At the age of 16, he started jogging, and a few months later, he won gold in the 2004 Paralympics in Athens. He was the first athlete with an amputee to take part in the Olympics.
After winning the Paralympics, Oscar tried to compete in international events open to athletes without disabilities, but the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) vehemently objected. He was the first double-leg amputee competitor in the 4 x 400 meter relay at the 2012 Olympics, as well as the first amputee to earn a non-disabled global track medal at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics. He uses “Flex-Foot Cheetah” carbon fiber prosthetics, designed by biomedical engineer Van Phillips and produced by Ossur, to run. In addition, he was found guilty in 2014 of killing his girlfriend negligently; in 2016, the conviction was upgraded to murder.
