American politician and attorney Lisa Murkowski is most recognized for her work as Alaska’s senior senator, a position she has held since 2002. After Senator Susan Collins of Maine, she is the second-most senior Republican woman in the Senate. The Republican Party is her political party. She is frequently referred to as a vital swing vote and one of the most moderate Republicans in the Senate. She served in the Alaska House of Representatives where she was elected majority leader before being appointed to the Senate. Her father, who resigned his position in the Senate in order to become governor of Alaska, controversially appointed her to the Senate.
In 2004, she ran for and won a full term. After Joe Miller of the Tea Party defeated Murkowski in the 2010 Republican primary, Murkowski ran as a write-in candidate and won the general election by defeating both Miller and McAdams. After Strom Thurmond in 1954, she is the second senator from the United States to hold a write-in election. In 2016, Murkowski won re-election to a third term while campaigning as a Republican. She also served as vice chair of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee beginning in 2021 and as chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee from 2015 to 2021. Also, She was one of seven Republican senators who voted on February 13, 2021, to find Donald Trump guilty of inciting an uprising during his second impeachment hearing. She received a censure from the Alaska Republican Party after her vote.
