His name has become synonymous with controversy over the years.
According to his official website, he is a paternal blood relative of Frederick Douglass and Bishop Alexander Wayman. Umar’s claim has been repeatedly refuted by the former’s estate.
In 2016, Frederick’s true descendants issued the following statement:
“We can tell you unequivocally that he is not a descendant of Frederick Douglass.”Despite the controversies surrounding him and the Frederick estate, Umar appears to be optimistic about his latest project (a school for boys called The Frederick Douglass & Marcus Garvey RBG International Leadership Academy).
In terms of his family history, Umar was born on August 21, 1974, in North Central Philadelphia. He is the third of eleven children (six boys and five girls).
As contentious as his origins are, his educational credentials have sparked even more debate. Umar, 44, self-identifies as a Doctor of Clinical Psychology and a Certified School Psychologist. His credibility as a doctor, on the other hand, has been called into question since his meteoric rise to fame.
