A molecular biologist whose contributions to the biology of halophilic and extremophilic microorganisms are well-known. He is a University of Maryland Baltimore Professor. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Indiana University Bloomington with a BS in Chemistry. He did study at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the Pasteur Institute in Paris before joining the faculty.
