Carman recorded a special album God’s Not Finished with Me in 1980. Bill Gaither invited him to tour with The Bill Gaither Trio the following year. After migrating to Tulsa, Oklahoma, he produced his eponymous debut album (later renamed Some-o-Dat) in 1982, which featured largely novelty songs and was modestly popular. As he pursued his musical career, he founded Carman Ministries, a non-profit organization. With the publication of The Champion in 1985, he had his first number-one single, which was also titled The Champion. Revival in the Land, his first number one Christian album, was released in 1989.
Carman received four Grammy nominations and sold over ten million albums. He is thought to hold the global record for the largest single Christian concert ever performed. In the first, he was the main attraction of a concert in Johannesburg, South Africa, in August 1993, which drew over 50,000 people. The following year, on October 22, 1994, he gave a free concert at Texas Stadium, which drew 71,132 people, and 80,000 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
On February 16, 2021, Carman died 28 days after his 65th birthday in a Las Vegas, Nevada, hospital following a series of complications from surgery to correct a hiatal hernia.
