An actress from Japan Junko Fuji was her first stage name, and she rose to prominence as the female lead in yakuza films alongside Kji Tsuruta and Ken Takakura. In the Hibotan Bakuto series, she also had her own series as the sword-wielding gambler Red Peony. She took a break from acting in 1972 after getting married but returned in 1974 under her real name. In 1989, she returned to film under the name Sumiko Fuji and extended her acting resume. In 1999 and 2006, she earned a Blue Ribbon Award for best-supporting actress. She is the mother of actress Shinobu Terajima and kabuki actor Onoe Kikugor VII, and she is married to kabuki actor Onoe Kikugor VII.
