Charles Tupper was born in Amherst, Canada on July 2, 1821. One of Canada’s founding fathers played a pivotal role in introducing Nova Scotia into the Canadian Confederation in 1867. He also served as Minister of Public Works and Minister of Railways and Canals. He is a former Prime Minister of Canada like his 20th-century contemporary Justin Trudeau. He had his first political position as a provincial secretary before becoming the 5th Premier of Nova Scotia in 1864.

Career
He attended Horton Academy in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, and went on to study medicine at the University of Edinburgh Medical School, where he earned his MD in 1843. He had handled 116 obstetric cases by the age of 22. Throughout his political career, he practiced medicine on a part-time basis (and served as the first president of the Canadian Medical Association). As a protégé of James William Johnston, he entered Nova Scotian politics in 1855. Tupper served as provincial secretary during Johnston’s terms as premier of Nova Scotia in 1857–1859 and 1863–1864. In 1864, Tupper took over as premier from Johnston.
