Shirley Walker was born in California on April 10, 1945. Though best remembered for scoring the 1992 Hollywood feature film Memoirs of an Invisible Man, this California-born composer also worked on Willard, the Final Destination films, and several television projects. She and composer Danny Elfman collaborated on the score of the 1990 television version of DC Comics’ The Flash. In the late 1970s, she contributed to the soundtrack of the Oscar-nominated film Apocalypse Now. Just a decade later, she became the first woman in Hollywood history to score a feature film.

Composer and conductor for film and television in the United States. She was one of the few female film composers in Hollywood at the time. Walker will be remembered as a pioneer for women in the film industry, according to the Los Angeles Times, as one of the first female composers to earn a solo score credit on a major Hollywood motion picture (preceded by Suzanne Ciani, who wrote the complete score to the film The Incredible Shrinking Woman in 1980, released January 1981). She composed all of her cinematic music by hand. She composed, arranged, and conducted all of her own music. In 2014, the ASCAP Shirley Walker Award was established in her honor.
