Victor Chang was born in Shanghai, China on November 21, 1936. The Chinese-born surgeon developed the artificial heart valve and was a pioneer of heart and heart-lung transplantation. Three years after Chang’s death, Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating launched the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute in his honor. He received his medical degree from the University of Sydney and worked as a surgical resident in both the United States and Great Britain. Upon his return to Australia, he helped found the National Cardiac Transplant Unit at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney.
