Biography
Auguste van Pels was born in Germany on September 29, 1900. Remembered for her association with diarist Anne Frank, she died in the Holocaust after being discovered in the Amsterdam office building hiding quarters she shared for a time with the Frank family. She is referred to in The Diary of Anne Frank as “Petronella van Daan.” She was imprisoned for a time with Anne and Margot Frank at the infamous Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, but she was later transferred to Theresiensdadt, where she ultimately died (some accounts claim that she passed away en route to the camp). Born Auguste Rottgen, she grew up in Buer, Germany. She went into hiding with her own family and the Frank family in July of 1942.

Career
In 1937, she, her husband Hermann, and their son Peter fled to the Netherlands from Germany. From 1942 to 1944, they lived in hiding with Anne Frank’s family until they were betrayed. Auguste and the Frank women were sent to Bergen-Belsen, but documents show that on February 6, 1945, Auguste was transferred to Raguhn (Germany’s Buchenwald), and on April 9, 1945, to the Czechoslovakian camp Theresienstadt. On the same card, she is listed as alive on April 11, 1945. Before the camp was liberated, she died in April or early May. According to one witness, she was killed when she was shoved onto a train track.
