An an inventor in the turn of the 20th century, he can be seen in relation to other inventors of the time including Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and Nikola Tesla. In 1885, he took control of his father’s business, Peeksill Chemical Co. While experimenting with a mixture of slate waste, cement, and talc, he created the first dustless white chalk. In 1903, he created his first box of crayola crayons.
