From January 1960 to November 1989, Rozelle was the commissioner of the National Football League (NFL), a position he held for over three decades. He is credited with turning the NFL into one of the world’s most successful sports leagues.
During Rozelle’s tenure, the NFL grew from 12 to 28 teams, he managed the formation of significant television-rights deals and Monday Night Football in 1970, he oversaw the 1970 NFL-AFL merger and the Super Bowl, and he helped the NFL transition from a twelve-game schedule to a sixteen-game schedule. Many people believed him to be the most influential commissioner in sports by the time he retired. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
