Explanation of Passengers’ Ending
Jim and Aurora discover hull breaches on their ship two years after an asteroid collision. The computer module in charge of the ship’s fusion reactor power plant has been severely damaged, resulting in a series of malfunctions. The module is replaced, but the computer’s attempt to vent the reactor fails.
Jim must spacewalk and manually vent the plasma from the outside. Jim must remain in the tube while Aurora initiates venting from within the ship in order to keep the vent open. Aurora confesses her deep fear of losing Jim and being alone in a heartfelt confession. Jim survives the venting but is ejected into space when his tether snaps and his spacesuit starts to lose oxygen.
Aurora finds Jim’s body and revives him in the Autodoc. The reactor has been repaired, and the Avalon has resumed normal operations. Jim discovers the Autodoc can function as a hibernation pod for one person after burying Gus in space. Aurora could go back to sleep for the rest of the journey, but she chooses to stay awake with Jim.
The crew awakens on time, eighty-eight years later, to find a lush and vibrant Homestead II. They discover a large tree with trailing vines, a small cabin, and flying birds in the ship’s grand concourse. Aurora’s story, as told on tape, describes the life she and Jim led on the Avalon. Jim had given Aurora a fake engagement ring, which she had accepted.
Movie: Passengers
The film Passengers, directed by Morten Tyldum and starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, was released in 2016. The film tells the story of two passengers, Jim and Aurora, who are awakened from hibernation on a spacecraft traveling to a distant colony planet 90 years too soon.
They realize something has gone horribly wrong as they explore the luxurious spaceship Avalon. Jim and Aurora soon discover that their hibernation pods have failed, leaving them as the only two awake on the ship with no way to return to sleep. They begin to bond and fall in love because they have no one else to talk to.
Their joy, however, is short-lived, as they soon learn that the ship is experiencing a critical malfunction, which could result in the death of all the other passengers in hibernation. Jim and Aurora must work together to save the ship and its passengers, even if it means risking their own lives.
Critics gave the film mixed reviews, with praise going to Lawrence and Pratt’s performances. The special effects and production design were also lauded, with the spaceship Avalon standing out in particular. Some, however, criticized the plot of the film, calling it predictable and lacking in depth.
