Michael Manzo grew up in Northern Maine, and his life wasn’t all that different. Along with his family, he traveled, hunted, and fished from “double-ended and square stern canoes.” Yes, he said, a canoe was a popular choice of boat for many of the rivers, lakes, and streams there. Furthermore, he had never seen jet boats used on shallow rivers.

APU is an abbreviation for Alaska Pacific University, which is where Michael received his higher education. He graduated in 2014 after spending his senior year researching “freighter canoes and adapting hydrodynamic fuel-efficient designs for Alaska’s waterways.”
