Career
He was a key figure in the shaping of doo-wop and R&B and was one of the most widely imitated R&B singers of the 1950s and early 1960s.
McPhatter’s high-pitched tenor voice was influenced by the gospel music he sang as a child. He was the lead tenor of the Mount Lebanon Singers, a gospel group he founded when he was a teenager. He later became the lead tenor of Billy Ward and His Dominoes, and he was largely responsible for the group’s early success. McPhatter left the Dominoes to form his own band, the Drifters, and later worked as a solo performer.
He was only 39 years old when he died, and had struggled for years with alcoholism and depression. He was “broke and despondent over a mismanaged career that made him a legend but hardly a success,” according to Jay Warner’s On This Day in Music History. McPhatter left a legacy of over 22 years of recording history behind him. He was the first person to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, first as a solo artist and then as a member of the Drifters. Members of the “Clyde McPhatter Club” are subsequent double and triple inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
