Armstrong quickly made a name for himself on Broadway. He received critical acclaim for his performance in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. In addition, he began writing his own plays, which were staged off-Broadway. Armstrong made his film debut in the 1954 film Garden of Eden. Armstrong was cast as the corrupt and cowardly Lou Stoner, a leading candidate for a territorial governorship, in the episode “The Giant Killer” of the ABC/Warner Brothers western series Sugarfoot, starring Will Hutchins. Armstrong played Angus Emmett on Cheyenne in the episode “Alabi for the Scalped Man” in 1960.
