Krukow was selected in the eighth round of the 1973 MLB draft by the Chicago Cubs. He was a member of the Chicago Cubs (1976–1981), Philadelphia Phillies (1982), and San Francisco Giants (1983–1989) in Major League Baseball. Right-handed batter and pitcher, he batted and threw.
Krukow had a successful career in the big leagues. He had his greatest year in 1986. For the San Francisco Giants, he had a 20–9 record and a 3.05 ERA. Krukow was third in the National League Cy Young Award voting that year, behind Mike Scott and Fernando Valenzuela. That season, Krukow was named to the National League All-Star team. In 1985 and 1986, he got the Willie Mac Award for his spirit and leadership. Krukow was a key player in the Giants’ first division championship victory in 1987.
