Career
An Australian-born racehorse who competed in Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria. Singapore, Malaya, France, Sweden, Ireland, and the United Kingdom were among the countries on his international itinerary. He began his career as an apprentice in 1934, and on his second ride in a race, in Toowoomba, a rural community about 80 miles west of Brisbane, he rode his first winner, “Camogean.” Mitchell, a horse trainer, was his trainee. He rose to become one of Australia’s greatest riders, winning numerous championships. During the Queensland Centennial in 1959, he was voted “Jockey of the Century.”
