Milley was born in Winchester, Massachusetts, on June 20, 1958. He attended the Belmont Hill School in Winchester, Massachusetts, where he was born. Milley earned a Bachelor of Arts in politics from Princeton University in 1980 after writing a 185-page final thesis titled “A Critical Analysis of Revolutionary Guerrilla Organization in Theory and Practice.” Milley also possesses a Columbia University Master of Arts in international relations and a Naval War College Master of Arts in national security and strategic studies. He also attended the MIT Center for International Studies Seminar XXI National Security Studies Program and graduated with honors.
His father, Alexander (1924–2015), joined the US Navy as a Navy Corpsman in March 1943. Milley served in the 4th Marine Division and landed on the islands of Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. He worked as a restaurateur and food trader after the war. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization open only to practicing Catholic males. Mary Elizabeth (née Murphy), Milley’s mother, was a nurse who served with the Navy’s WAVES during WWII and was described by Milley as a “break-the-glass-ceiling” type of lady.
