Career
Snyder was the chairman of the board of Gateway, Inc. from 2005 to 2007. He co-founded Ardesta, LLC, a venture capital business, and HealthMedia, Inc., a digital health coaching company, both in Ann Arbor, Michigan, prior to his election as governor. He announced his bid for re-election as Governor of Michigan on February 3, 2014. In November 2014, he was re-elected to a second term, defeating his main opponent, Democrat Mark Schauer. Snyder’s term was up in 2018, and he couldn’t run for re-election. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, was elected to succeed him on New Year’s Day, 2019.
Snyder became well-known during the Flint water crisis, when he was accused of mishandling the matter, which exposed 6,000 to 12,000 Flint children to lead. Snyder “bears major legal responsibility” for the Flint water disaster, according to research from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. On April 16, 2020, Vice published a piece detailing evidence of corruption and a cover-up by Snyder, including details of how he was repeatedly warned about the dangerous consequences of his policies regarding Flint’s water supply. Snyder was one of the people charged in January 2021 for his role in the disaster.
