For the 1866 season, Mike and his older brother Hugh Campbell joined the Irvington Club in Irvington, New Jersey. The Irvingtons were a new member of the National Association of Base Ball Players and a “country club” in the sense that Irvington was still beyond the city limits. Mike Campbell, a sixteen-year-old first baseman, appeared in 13 of the team’s 17 games on record. He struck out more than his fair share of batters while scoring less than his fair share of runs. Hugh Campbell appeared in 17 games, mostly at center field. Pitcher Rynie Wolters and catcher Andy Leonard were the best players.
