Satyajit Ray was born in India on May 2, 1921. Regarded as one of the greatest Indian filmmakers in history. He was known for directing The Chess Players, Distant Thunder, and The Stranger. He directed the acclaimed 1977 film The Chess Players, which starred Sanjeev Kumar. He graduated with a degree in economics from Presidency College, Calcutta.

Career
Following a meeting with French filmmaker Jean Renoir and a watching of Vittorio De Sica’s Italian neorealist film Bicycle Thieves (1948) during a vacation to London, he was pulled into independent filmmaking.
Ray directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries, and shorts, as well as writing a number of short tales and novels aimed mostly at children and teenagers. Oxford University bestowed an honorary degree on him in 1978.
Pather Panchali (1955), Ray’s first film, earned eleven international awards, including the first Best Human Document award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1956. The Apu Trilogy consists of this film, Aparajito (1956), and Apur Sansar (The World of Apu) (1959).
Ray won 32 Indian National Cinema Accolades, a Golden Lion, a Golden Bear, two Silver Bears, and numerous more awards at international film festivals and ceremonies, as well as an Academy Honorary Award in 1992. In 1992, the Indian government awarded him the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honor.
