Career
After signing with Columbia in 1969, her first chart hit was a remake of the Otis Redding classic “I’ve been loving you too long (to stop now).” In 1970, Mandrell scored the first of the top 40 hits with “Playin’ Around With Love.” She began performing with singer David Houston in the same year, and their partnership also resulted in considerable chart success. Mandrell’s first releases earned respect from her country peers, but her first major breakthrough with fans came in 1973 with the single “The Midnight Oil;” it was the first cheating song to be sung from the perspective of the woman who was cheating, which was unheard of at the time.
In 1975, Mandrell jumped to the ABC/Dot label and, under the guidance of producer Tom Collins, for the first time reached the top five with the single “Standing Room Only”. In the 1980s, Mandrell had more hits, including “Crackers” and “Wish You Were Here” In 1980, Mandrell became the third woman to receive the “Entertainer of the Year” award from the Country Music Association.
In October 1997, she retired from performing and performing, although she appeared sporadically on stage in the 2010s.
