Ralph Ellison was born in Oklahoma City, OK on March 1, 1914. American author who wrote the literary classic, Invisible Man, which addresses social identity issues facing African-Americans in the early-to-mid 20th century. The novel received the National Book Award for Fiction in 1953. He was named in honor of author Ralph Waldo Emerson. He attended the Tuskegee Institute on a musical scholarship and spent much of his time in the library reading modern classics. Later, he moved to New York City to study art, and he became involved in Communist circles.
