Ben Webster was born in Kansas City, MO on March 27, 1909. Known by the nickname ‘The Brute,’ he is one of the three most important swing tenor musicians to ever make music, grouped with Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins. Webster recorded a classical album called The Tatum Group Masterpieces, Vol. 8 with Art Tatum, Red Callender, and Bill Douglass. He was taught how to play piano and violin before focusing on saxophone; he was eventually invited to play with Duke Ellington‘s Orchestra in 1935.
