A singer-songwriter and musician from the United States He was well-known for his work with the Allman Brothers Band. Allman grew up listening to rhythm and blues music, which the Allman Brothers Band occasionally mixed with rock, jazz, and country. He wrote several hit songs for the band, including “Whipping Post,” “Melissa,” and “Midnight Rider.” Allman also had a successful solo career, with seven studio albums to his credit. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and spent much of his childhood there before moving to Daytona Beach, Florida, and then Richmond Hill, Georgia.

He and his brother, Duane Allman, formed the Allman Brothers Band in 1969, and their 1971 live album At Fillmore East catapulted them to mainstream success. Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident not long after. Brothers and Sisters (1973) was the band’s most successful album. The following year, Allman launched a solo career with Laid Back, and for the rest of the decade, he was perhaps best known for his marriage to pop star, Cher. In 1987, he had an unexpected late-career hit with his cover of “I’m No Angel,” and his seventh solo album, Low Country Blues (2011), charted at the top of the charts.
