Maddux was a member of the Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, Montreal Expos, and Houston Astros in Major League Baseball from 1986 to 2000. Except for the Phillies, with whom he spent his first four seasons, he never played for a franchise for more than two seasons.
Maddux has worked with the Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers, Washington Nationals, and St. Louis Cardinals as a pitching coach. Teams that hired him allowed fewer runs to be scored as a result. For the first time since 1990, the Rangers’ pitching staff posted season earned run averages (ERA) below 4.00 for four straight seasons while he was coaching them. After the 2015 season, the Nationals hired him, and the Cardinals hired him after the 2017 season.
