Career
Mervyn Johns began his acting career in the 1920s and went on to direct his first picture in 1935. He had played the role of the churchwarden in Went the Day Well? (1942), the terrified architect Walter Craig in the mystery thriller Dead of Night (1945), and Bob Cratchit in Scrooge (1951) with Alastair Sim. Johns also appeared in a number of television shows, including The Avengers, The Saint, Danger Man, and Dixon of Dock Green. In almost 100 films and television programs, he was recognized for his “usually mild-mannered, lugubrious, humorous, sometimes affecting ‘small men.'”
