Alex Pettyfer was born on April 10, 1990, in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England, as Alexander Richard Pettyfer. Pettyfer is of English descent and holds British citizenship. Richard Pettyfer and Lee Robinson, his English parents, are his only children.  His father is an actor, and his mother is a designer.

His parents divorced when he was a child, and his mother remarried property developer Michael Ireland. From his mother’s second marriage, he has a younger half-brother, James Ireland. Alex completed high school at a variety of private institutions.
