Career
The last confirmed American Revolutionary War veteran. House Bill 1044 declared him a war hero and granted him a $500 semi-annual pension (passed by Congress February 22, 1866). James M. Dalzell, a journalist/attorney, wrote John Gray, of Mount Vernon: the Last Soldier of the Revolution, which was published by Gibson Brothers, Printers in 1868. After the death of Samuel Downing in Edinburgh, Saratoga County, New York, in the fall of 1867, the Bureau of Pensions of the United States Department of the Interior assumed John Gray to be the last living veteran.
