An American-Canadian middleweight boxer who was wrongfully accused of murder and then released after spending nearly 20 years in jail after filing a habeas corpus petition. Carter and his co-defendant, John Artis, were convicted in 1966 for a triple homicide at the Lafayette Bar and Grill in Paterson, New Jersey. A car containing Carter, Artis, and a third acquaintance was stopped by police outside the bar shortly after the killings at 2:30 a.m., as its occupants were on their way home from a nearby nightclub.
