The third of seven siblings of parents Kit Culkin and Patricia Brentrup, Macaulay started off in the acting business with a number of Off-Broadway shows like New York City Ballet's The Nutcracker when he was just four years old.  Then at five, he entered the screen with a very minor role in a 1995 episode of The Midnight Hour. His big-screen debut came in 1988 with Cy Blue Black in Rocket Gibraltar, and it was a roller-coaster ride for a while after that.

He reportedly said he would stop taking roles until the custody battle was settled.

There were reports the whole Culkin family could be homeless after the control of young Macaulay's finances were taken from the parents and given to his accountant in February 1997. However, the custody battle ended later that year in April as Culkin (Sr.) conceded full custody of him and his siblings to Brentrup.
