Sig Hansen was born to Sverre Hansen and Snefryd Hansen on April 28, 1966, in Seattle, Washington, U.S. He is the descendant of Norwegian-ancestry fishermen. His father, as well as his grandfather, were in the fishing business pioneering opilio crab fishing in Alaska.
He began fishing at a very early age of 14. He spent his childhood fishing for over 10 months a year in Alaska and the Bering Sea.
