Phoenix was born Joaquín Rafael Bottom on October 28, 1974, in the Río Piedras district of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
He was born to his parents from the U.S. mainland. His mother’s name is Arlyn Phoenix and his father’s name is John Lee Bottom.
He is the third of 5 children, including River, Rain, Liberty & Summer.
He also has a half-sister named Jodean from a previous relationship with his father.
Phoenix’s father is originally from Fontana, California, is of English, & some German & French, ancestry.
His mother was born in the Bronx, New York, to Jewish parents whose families emigrated from Russia & Hungary.
In order to provide food & financial support for the family, the children performed on the streets & at various talent contests, singing & playing instruments.
Phoenix & his siblings were eventually discovered by 1 of Hollywood’s leading children’s agents, Iris Burton, who got them acting work.
