Don has five siblings; William, Jack, Richard, Steven, and Mark. Earlier, he attended Ben Davis High School, and then, Herron School of Arts.

Afterward, Don Gummer went to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts from 1966-1970.

Later, Gummer graduated with BFA and MFA from the Yale School of Arts. He belongs of German descent.
