He is the son of his parents Charles Simons and Tameka Simons. Anfernee attended Edgewater High School in Orlando, Florida, where he also commenced his amateur basketball career. Eventually, he joined the IMG Academy in Bradenton for a postgraduate year.

Subsequently, he graduated from Edgewater in 2017 averaging 23.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.8 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game in 20 games played in his last year there.
Anfernee finally made his way into the NBA field as the 24th overall pick of the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2018 NBA draft, as he rejected many offers from the college teams. He penned a three-year, $6,237,120 worth contract with the team on 2 July 2018. As per the terms, he receives an average salary of $2,079,040.
He was assigned to the Agua Caliente Clippers for an NBA G League assignment by the Blazers on 21 January 2019. Anfernee made his first career start for the Trail Blazers against the Sacramento Kings on 10 April 2019. He recorded stats of 37 points, 6 rebounds, and 9 assists in the game.
