After serving as vice mayor, he chose to run for Mayor of Makati City in 2001 against fellow politician Jejomar Binay. After joining the United States Air Force at 17, he graduated from La Salle and moved to the Philippines to pursue a full-time career with the local film industry. His career in politics then began in 2010 when he chose to run for vice president of the Philippines.
